AS WE PREPARE FOR A SEASON OF HIBERNATION, OUT COME THE JUMPERS AND ON GOES THE CENTRAL HEATING. WE LOVE THIS SEASON AT THE GARDEN – SNUGGLING DOWN IN OUR OWN PRIVATE HYGGE ZONE IS TOTALLY OUR THING BUT THERE’S ALSO NOTHING QUITE LIKE A BARE FACED, BRIGHT AND CRISP MORNING TO PICK YOU UP AND SET YOUR DAY OFF IN THE RIGHT WAY.
THE EXTREMES OF TEMPERATURE WE FACE DURING THIS SEASON HOWEVER CAN PLAY HAVOC WITH OUR SKIN – LITTLE WONDER IT CAN START TO FEEL TIGHT AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE’RE ALL ABOUT WELLBEING ACROSS MIND, BODY AND SOUL AND AS THE LARGEST ORGAN OF OUR BODIES, SKIN IS NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE IGNORED. IN THIS BLOG POST WE HAVE ENLISTED THE EXPERTISE OF HOLISTIC FACIALIST, EMMALINE TSUI TO COACH US THROUGH HOW TO KEEP OUR SKIN SUPPLE OVER THE WINTER MONTHS.
The Art Of Prevention
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that prevention is always better than cure right? It’s so true as well. However, I don’t think it’s just about prevention, but also as the Girl Guides will say “always be prepared”.
When it comes to skincare and the Winter months, I think it is so so important to always be prepared, which then leads to preventing further skin problems! Winter can really be a testing time for our skin. With all the central heating, cold and frosty weather, plus those beautiful bright sunny days, our skin can take quite a battering. That’s why, if we can knuckle down and get ourselves ready for ‘hibernation’ as it were, we can shimmy into Winter with beautiful and glowing skin (and also come out the other side of it too looking just as glamorous!).
So, with all that in mind, here are my top tips for preventing dull and tired skin in Winter…
INTRODUCING A FACE OIL
I can’t recommend this enough. Face oils are fabulous for keeping the skin healthy and moisturised. With the hit of the cold weather on our skin and then the dehydrating effects of heating, the moisture can just leach out. Face oils are a really lovely way of protecting the skin’s natural barrier and preventing that loss of oils. I love to use a face oil twice daily from Autumn throughout Winter to keep my skin nice and hydrated. I use around 3 drops of oil in the morning under a moisturiser and around 5 drops at night too.
(I love to use the Viceroy & Grace Botanical Oil available from www.viceroyandgrace.com)
CONTINUE WITH YOUR SUN PROTECTION
Please do not be tempted to pack your sun protection away with all your holiday and summer clothes. I would highly recommend using a sun protection daily (no matter what the weather). We need an SPF every day not to only protect us from UVB rays but also UVA rays. The UVA levels are always the same whether the sun is shining or not plus having an SPF on will act as another layer to protect your skin. I love to use an SPF as a makeup primer as I find primers can really suck the life out of your skin. Plus also be wary of foundations and day creams with built in SPFs as they are not always that well formulated.
(Why not try the Nimue SPF 40 available to buy from my clinic www.tsui.life)
HYDRATE WITH FACE MASKS
If you don’t feel like you have the time to do a regular facial at home, there are two things that you can do. Firstly, you can treat yourself to a regular facial to keep your skin moisturised and glowing. This is a great way to keep on top of your skin condition and also get the best advice about what products will suit you. The second option is to use an overnight face mask at home. They are super simple to use as all you need to do is wash your face before bed and apply the mask. Ideally if you can fit in an exfoliation as well that would be even better! Then you wake up in the morning with super hydrated skin and also a smug feeling of being so productive whilst you were sleeping!
(My favourite is the Nimue Anti-Aging Overnight Mask available from my clinic at www.tsui.life)
USE A ‘WHOLE’-LISTIC APPROACH
Obviously being a Holistic Facialist I believe that it is important to treat your body as a ‘whole’. As much as it is important to look after our face and necks, the skin on the rest of our body is just as crucial too. Don’t forget to do a gentle exfoliation in the shower and then follow with a nice and nourishing body oil. Why not have a look for some recipes at www.tsui.life. I have a range of aromatherapy blends that can easily be used to treat the body and keep it hydrated.
Plus it’s not just about treating the skin from the outside in, but also the inside out! This time of year it’s so important to keep our bodies healthy with lots of nutritious foods. My fav is always the soup from The Garden. It always tastes delicious, it’s organic and it’s packed full of nutrients that you can feel working inside your body as you drink it!
So there you have it, some quick and easy things that you can build into your daily routine to prevent your skin from losing that glow that you worked all Summer long for!
